Adobe says that India is among the leading countries in digital marketing
28 Apr 2016 , 08:40
India is one of the leading countries for Adobe’s revenue generation in digital marketing globally, a senior executive of Adobe Systems India Pvt Ltd said here on Wednesday, adding that the Asia Pacific region is the fastest growing market for the company and stands among the top 10 markets in the world.
“If you look at the total revenue of Adobe last year, it was $4.896 billion and Asia Pacific contributed nearly 18-21 percent of the entire revenue,” Umang Bedi, managing director (south Asia), Adobe, told IANS ahead of “Adobe Symposium 2016” to be hosted here on Thursday.
The proliferation of content across platforms and data has become a significant part in a customer’s life, said Bedi, adding that brands today are being forced to take up personalised, relevant and useful experiences to deliver value to the customers.
There is a new trend of ‘cross-device co-op’ to better identify consumers as they move across devices. This not only keeps track of the activities as they move from one device to another but also provide users a better and consistent experience.
“Another trend I am witnessing is the video. Video is the new voice. Not just streaming which is just a part of the whole concept but video has use cases for education, healthcare and every other industry in India,” Bedi noted.
Bedi pointed out that in the near future, artificial intelligence (AI) would become a big trend in this space.
“I am seeing this massive trend of Internet of Things (IoT) with our customers (where devices talk to devices). Although augmented reality (AR) and virtual reality (VR) are still some time away but I see both of them becoming a big trend in the future,” Bedi pointed out.
When asked how the world of direct and digital marketing are coming together, he said the online and offline marketing lines are blurring now.
“All commerce is e-commerce and Adobe talked about it a year ago. You could research online and buy online or vice-versa. Offline companies are going online and firms which were pure e-commerce companies are now setting up stores. Adobe is here to create the same experience online and offline,” Bedi explained.
“Omni channel is here to stay. Experience is the new brand, customer journey is the new product, data is the voice of the customer and content is how you respond to it across this customer journey,” he added.
According to him, Adobe is the largest company and does digital marketing for over 10,000 brands across the globe.
“In terms of scale, on the Software-As-A-Service (SaaS) platform, we are measuring 41 trillion transactions per year, 45 percent of which are mobile. Adobe is serving an unmatched scale of 4.1 trillion rich media requests,” he told IANS.
Bedi also spoke about projects Adobe has completed or still working with the Indian government.
“We have done projects under the national e-governance programme (NEGP). We power Ministry of Corporate Affairs’ website, the passport service and e-businesses, among others. We are also working with the ministry of tourism across states,” he said.
“We are now focused around ‘Digital India’. We are seeing opportunities in marquee projects like ‘Smart Cities’ and prime minister Narendra Modi’s ambitious UMANG (Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance) project that will bring 200 governments services on one platform,” Bedi added.

ZOTAC, a name which is quite well known in the graphics card and mini PC space has now diversified into the SSD segment as well. It has started off by releasing three categories of SSDs – the Premium, the T500 and the Sonix PCIe based SSDs. We got the 240GB Premium SSD for testing. Let us check it out.
Build and Design

ZOTAC is known for its black and yellow colour accents with its graphics cards and mini PCs. But with the Premium 240GB SSD, you just get a black coloured aluminum SSD with just the ZOTAC logo painted on it. It is as simple as it can get with ZOTAC. Only the packaging has a hint of yellow which gives some semblance that this is a ZOTAC product.

It comes with a SATA 6 Gbps interface and has a 7mm z-height making it ideal to be inserted in your laptop. There are three capacities of the Premium edition drives: 120GB, 240GB, 480GB. Opening up the SSD requires you to pull out the top sheath and the PCB is screwed on to the base.

There are four Toshiba A19 MLC NAND chips on either side of the PCB along with the Nanya 256MB DDR3L cache buffer. The Phison S10 controller – the 8-channel quad-core controller is seen on the ZOTAC Premium SSD.

ATTO Benchmark
This is the most popular storage benchmarking tool and allows you to check read and write speeds across various transfer sizes and queue depths. ATTO is also a good tool to check for the marketing spiel of SSD makers where they publish sequential read and write speeds on the packaging.

AS SSD
AS SSD is a benchmark tool built specifically for SSDs which uses incompressible data and calculates sequential and random read and write speeds and gives an overall score at the end. It also gives you the input/output operations per second or IOPS for each of those tests which is interesting. Apart from this you can also perform Copy Test where it creates test folders for large files simulating ISO, programs and games and measures the transfer speeds and duration.

PC Mark 7
PC Mark 7 is a complete PC benchmarking solution for Windows 7 having a dedicated Storage test module. It is a collection of workloads that isolate the performance of your PC’s SSD. The Secondary Storage test allows you to test drives other than your system drive. It simulates operations such as importing pictures, gaming, starting applications and so on.

Anvil Storage Utilities
Anvil Storage utilities is another versatile SSD benchmark tool which besides having an in-built SSD tool, also allows you the option to tweak the settings. Just like the AS SSD benchmark, you get a read, write and an overall score. The tables are more in-depth as it gives you response time, IOPS, MB read/written and finally the transfer speeds in MB/s. You can perform threaded I/O read and write tests where you can adjust block size as well as the queue depth. We ran the SSD test using 100 per cent incompressible and 46 per cent compression.

Verdict and Price in India
ZOTAC has released a good SSD to start off its entry in the SSD market with. At Rs 6,999 for the MRP, the ZOTAC Premium 240GB performs at par with the Kingston HyperX Savage SSD which costs Rs 2,500 more. In terms of 4K random read and write speeds too the ZOTAC Premium is better than the Savage. And the in terms of IOPS it outclasses most of the drives in the charts when it comes to read operations. This is certainly an SSD worth considering if you are building a mid-range (Rs 40,000) rig.

Twitter to be used in schools? The social network found to be helpful by teachers says report

Twitter to be used in schools? The social network found to be helpful by teachers says report
28 Apr 2016 , 13:32
Get ready to say good morning to Twitter in classroom soon as the micro-blogging can help teachers engage students in a more efficient way and better prepare them to take on New-Age challenges, researchers reveal.
Twitter, if used properly, can produce better outcomes among middle school students and enhance the way children learn in the 21st century.
“Our work adds a critical lens to the role of open social networking tools such as Twitter in the context of adolescents’ learning and raises new questions about the potential for social media as a lever for increasing the personalisation of education,” explained Penny Bishop, professor and director of the Tarrant Institute for Innovative Education at University of Vermont.
Lead researcher Ryan Becker used his middle school science classes to conduct the research in conjunction with co-author Bishop.
Becker found that 95 percent of his students agreed or strongly agreed that Twitter enabled them to follow real science in real time as it develops around the world.
Particularly motivating was the ability to interact via Twitter with leading organisations like the US space agency NASA and science-related programmes.
The findings highlight the potential of Twitter as a means to personalise learning and to expand secondary students’ encounters with science professionals and organisations.
The study revealed that 93 percent of students surveyed think Twitter enabled them to interact and share perspectives with a global audience outside the classroom.
“When I have something important to share about science that I like, as many as 52 people (Twitter followers) can see what I tweet instantly,” said one student.
Another student said they use Twitter for academic support by tweeting with other students about concepts, assignments and projects.
Ninety-one percent said Twitter helped them make connections between science and their own lives and interests.
“Twitter has made me think about things that I like and had me think about the science related to them,” added another student.
Others said Twitter helped them learn about science in new ways that related to their everyday lives.
Additionally, 81 percent of students agreed that Twitter helped them think creatively about new ways to communicate science.
Twitter is also an extremely powerful assessment tool, according to Becker, who recommends displaying tweets on an electronic “smart” board so students and teachers can assess and discuss them together.
Teachers can also ask students to tweet examples of specific scientific concepts like the students in Becker’s class who tweeted personal examples of Newton’s First Law.
Teachers can also have students respond to scientific poll questions and share instant results with their class.
Students continued to tweet outside of class making certain topics a constant conversation.
The 140-character limit also forces students to distill down major concepts like “what is chemistry,” Becker noted in a paper forthcoming in Middle School Journal.

Google tells Delhi High Court that it hasn’t earned any money from content uploaded by central govt

Google tells Delhi High Court that it hasn’t earned any money from content uploaded by central govt
28 Apr 2016 , 13:24
Google Inc Wednesday told the Delhi High Court it has not earned any revenue out of the agreement with the government or any other monetary benefit from content uploaded on the YouTube platform under the deal.
The company also told a bench of justices Badar Durrez Ahmed and Sanjeev Sachdeva that petitioner K N Govindacharya has “failed to establish that the content provided by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting under the agreement has been monetized by Google Inc”.
“Any allegation in this regard is absolutely denied as being unfounded and baseless.
“…based on verification of records maintained by Google Ireland in relation to agreement and made available to its parent entity i.e. Google Inc, that Google has not monetized the content owned and uploaded by Ministry of Information and Broadcasting on the YouTube platform under the agreement,” Google Inc, the parent company of Google Ireland which operates YouTube, in its affidavit said.
Google Inc’s submission was opposed by advocate Virag Gupta, representing former BJP leader Govindacharya, saying the court in its March 14 order had directed for clear cut affidavit on the line, which Google India had filed.
Earlier, Google India Pvt Ltd had submitted that it has not earned any revenue out of the agreement with the Centre.
The court recorded the statement of Google Inc that it did earn any revenue or any other monitory benefit out of the agreement with the government and disposed of the petition.
Earlier, the Centre had told the court that it has no “customised agreements” with Facebook, Twitter and WhatsApp.
There are no customised agreements with YouTube (Google) either, except the one (with Google Ireland/ YouTube) mentioned above”.
These submissions were made by the authorities concerned on a PIL filed by Govindacharya raising questions on social media usage by the government.
On January 27, the government had filed the content licence agreement entered into with Google Ireland in 2013 regarding content put up on YouTube.
The petitioner had said the social networking sites are not paying due taxes on their Indian operations as per provisions of double taxation avoidance agreement and the government is not taking any action to safeguard the national interest and sovereignty of India.
The petition had also said social networking sites should be directed to ensure verification of all existing and future users and refrain from allowing access to children below 13 years, which against law.

Bill Gates once said 'definitely send me a resume' if you finish this fiendishly difficult book

In the world of Silicon Valley, there are few books held in higher esteem than "The Art of Computer Programming," a multi-volume set by Stanford professor emiritus Donald Knuth.

Donald Knuth, the "father of the analysis of algorithms"

Art of Computer Programming... You should definitely send me a resume if you can read the whole thing," said a quote from Bill Gates on the cover of the third edition of the first volume.
That quote was taken from a syndicated newspaper column that Gates used to write, reported the MIT Technology Review, where he also praised its legendary difficulty:
"It took incredible discipline, and several months, for me to read it. I studied 20 pages, put it away for a week, and came back for another 20 pages. If somebody is so brash that they think they know everything, Knuth will help them understand that the world is deep and complicated."
When the first volume of "The Art of Computer Programming" came out in 1962, it was the first book to take a deep look into the math and science of programming. Knuth has made this his life's work, and has said that it'll be a 7-volume set before it's done, "God willing." The most recent piece of the book was released in December of 2015.
"The four hardbound volumes of Donald Knuth's 'The Art of Computer Programming'?-?all snug in their dark purple case ?- ?send a clear message: Step aside, Muggles, because you're in the presence of a Real Programmer. A Serious Practitioner of Computer Science," writes San Francisco entrepreneur Carl Tashian in a recent Medium essay.
Over that long span, Knuth's work has become the stuff of tech industry legend - a rite of passage for any programmer who wants to go beyond mere coding and deeper into the underlying complexity that makes it all work.
"If there is a Koran, Bible, or Tao of Computer Science, this is it," wrote an Amazon reviewer in 1997.

It's known for being thorough and deep, sure, but also tremendously challenging and bruising to the ego of many programmers. The cream of the crop, including Gates himself, have trouble navigating Knuth's example problems and dense mathematical proofs.

And despite its long publishing history, Knuth keeps "The Art of Computer Programming" up to date by enlisting his many fans. If you spot any kind of error in his books, you might get one of his famous "Knuth reward checks," a bounty in the amount of $2.56, or what he calls "one hexidecimal dollar." Those checks are a valuable prize for anyone who wants to prove they know what they're talking about.
