Reconstructed at a cost of Rs 11 crore by Jammu and Kashmir Projects Construction Corporation Limited (JKPCC), the bridge was dismantled in 2012. For the past four years, the 154-metre long bridge has been revamped with deodar and wooden decks on both sides.
Zero Bridge is the oldest bridges in the state’s summer capital constructed in 1950s.
Impressed with the facets of the refurbished bridge, the then Chief Minister, Mufti Mohammad Sayeed had during his visit to the site in 2015 announced that it should come up as a heritage tourism spot in the city.
Following the directions of the then Chief Minister, the refurbished bridge has been given a traditional Kashmiri heritage touch. A traditional houseboat design ‘Food Court’ has been built near the bridge which is a blend of traditional and modern outlook. “The bridge would be used for only pedestrian movement. It is a sort of picnic spot laced with traditional design,” JKPCC officials said.
Having a seating capacity of 2700 sqfts, the centrally heated Food Court has four sightseeing decks. The Food Court will have four-seater tables in dining room, a kitchen, two wash rooms, besides a lounge. The roof of the court has thermo-treated flooring keeping in view the cold climate in Kashmir.
Earlier, the bridge was used for vehicular movement, but in 1980 its wooden planks and piers could no longer support vehicular traffic. Subsequently, the bridge located two kilometers from city centre Lal Chowk, was closed for vehicular traffic two decades ago

Google plans to move away from passwords for logins

Google plans to move away from passwords for logins
By
Google plans to gradually move away from the current framework of login’s that relies on the age old concept of Username and Password. The plan is to minimise or actually eliminate the concept along with addition of PIN or Password sent to your phone via SMS or email, a system known as two-factor authentication. TechCrunch was the first to report on the Google’s ambitious plan to kill the passwords.
The Company has been trying to develop technology to move away from passwords and other conventional methods of login security since some time now. The result of all these efforts transpired in the form of Project Abacus, unveiled last year during Google I/O 2015 and this year Google showed the development ever since.
Project Abacus is a system that opts for biometric data in place of the passwords or two-factor authentication and gathers data by using the phone sensors to gather the location, typing pattern, the way one is walking and other details like speed, voice patterns and facial recognition.
This year Google showed the progress since the last year and the initial project evolved into Trust API. This system works on the concept that people, even if unable to remember passwords, can act like themselves so that the bulk of password recalling is shifted to the device.
This system works on gathering all this data while running in the background. All the parameters are evaluated and a ‘Trust Score’ is calculated. This along with the Trust API can be used by developers all around the world along with the ability to give different Apps’ different requirements or levels of ‘Trust Score,’. For example, a banking app can ideally use a higher ‘Trust Score’ and a gaming app can use a lower score for login.
The availability of the API depends on how it performs in testing. Even though Google has a rudimentary implementation of the same using ‘Smart Lock’, where you can unlock the device when the device is in a ‘Trusted Location’ and a ‘Trusted Bluetooth’, but this provides a far secure and comprehensive solution to go password-free.
Trust API can be a complete solution while competing with Apple’s TouchID and Microsoft’s Windows Hello.

Afghan Taliban announces Mullah Haibatullah as successor to Mansour

The Afghan Taliban on Wednesday named Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada as its new leader to replace former chief Mullah Akhtar Mansour who was killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan, an official statement said.

"The Islamic Emirate's leadership council decided to appoint Mawlawi Haibatullah Akhundzada as the new leader of the Islamic Emirate and Mawlawi Sirajuddin Haqqani and Mawlawi Mohammad Yaqoob as his deputies," the Taliban statement read.

Haqqani, who has a $10 million State Department bounty on his head, is the leader of Haqqani terror network, long aligned with the Taliban and Al Qaeda, and Yaqoob the son of former long-time Taliban leader Mullah Mohammed Omar, CNN reported.

According to officials, Akhundzada is a religious scholar and former head of the Taliban courts, was one of the Afghan Taliban's deputy leaders. He has been responsible for issuing most of Taliban's fatwas.

From Kandahar province, he belongs to the Eshaqzai clan. He is said to maintain close links with the Quetta Shura, the Afghan Taliban leaders said to be based in the Pakistani city of Quetta.

"All the members of the leadership council pledged allegiance to the newly appointed leader," the statement said, adding allegiance to the new leader is "a religious obligation".

It called on "all Muslims" to enter a three-day period of mourning for Mansour.

The same statement also confirmed Mansour's death, who was killed in a US drone strike in Pakistan's Balochistan province on Saturday.

The Taliban had previously confirmed Mansour's death to CNN but Wednesday's announcement is the first public statement from the group to affirm the death.

US and Afghan intelligence agencies had also independently confirmed his demise.

Mansour had inherited the leadership from leader Omar, who died in Pakistan in 2013. Omar had held the position since the inception of the movement in 1994.

Terming the encounter, in which the two youth were killed by forces in the late night encounter at Saria Bala here on Monday, as staged, Dukhtaran-e-Millat chairperson, Aasiya Andrabi, has appealed the government of Pakistan to approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) against India’s  disregard of the international laws.
“Two of our youth were killed mercilessly in a fake encounter at Saria Bala and a similar kind of encounter was staged at Drugmulla, Baramulla last week. There is no information about the identity of these youth. By all means, these encounters were staged,” she said in a statement.

She said the government of Pakistan must understand that India, at all levels, is trying to dilute the disputed nature of JK. “So it is the responsibility of Pakistan to counter these aggressive and oppressive tactics of India. Pakistan must approach the International Court of Justice (ICJ) at the earliest. Though India has been maiming and killing Kashmiris from the past seven decades, it has been more aggressive in its approach in the recent past,” she said.

New world record in radio transmission at 6 Gbps

New world record in radio transmission at 6 Gbps
A team of researchers from Germany has set a new world record by transferring the contents of a conventional DVD in under 10 seconds by radio transmission with a data rate of six gigabit per second (Gbps) over a distance of 37 kms.
The team achieved the record data transmission on a stretch between Cologne and the 36.7 km distant town of Wachtberg. The extremely high data rate was achieved by the group through efficient transmitters and receivers at a radio frequency of 71-76 GHz in the so-called “E band”, regulated for terrestrial and satellite broadcasting.
Researchers from University of Stuttgart and the Fraunhofer Institute for Applied Solid State Physics IAF participated in this collaborative project. The transmission of high quantities of data by radio over large distances serves a high number of important application areas.
The next generation of satellite communication requires an ever-increasing data offload from earth observation satellites down to earth. With this technology, not only rural area and remote regions could be supplied with fast internet, but also 250 internet connections can be supplied with 24 Mbits/s ADSL, University of Stuttgart said in a statement.
Terrestrial radio transmissions in the “E-band” are suitable as a cost-effective replacement for deployment of optical fibre or as ad-hoc networks in the case of crises and catastrophe and for connecting base stations in the backhaul of mobile communication systems.
The collaborative project ACCESS (Advanced E Band Satellite Link Studies) was carried out by a team headed by Professor Ingmar Kallfass from the Institute of Robust Power Semiconductor Systems (ILH) at University of Stuttgart.

Hackers link over 2,500 high-profile Twitter accounts to sex websites: Report

Hackers link over 2,500 high-profile Twitter accounts to sex websites: Report
More than 2,500 Twitter accounts have been compromised to tweet links to adult dating and sex websites, said global cyber security leader Symantec.
There were a number of high-profile accounts caught up in the hacking, including ones belonging to the band Chromeo, a journalist working for The Telegraph, stand-up comedian Azeem Banatwala, Houston Texans wide receiver Cecil Shorts III and the late New York Times reporter David Carr, the report added.
The attackers changed the profile photo and the basic information of the accounts to promote adult sites.
“Rather than tweeting or direct-messaging users, the attackers used these compromised accounts to like tweets and follow other users, hoping to capitalise on users being curious enough to investigate their Twitter profiles,” the report noted.
If users visit the compromised profile, they will see tweets — with sexually suggestive photos and shortened links — that claim to offer free sign-ups to watch “hot shows” over webcam or dates and sexual encounters.
Symantec believes the culprit responsible for these compromises earns $4 for each person who signs up for the adult dating site.
The company also noted some steps to secure the Twitter accounts.
It asked users to create strong and unique passwords or use a password manager if you want to create and securely store your passwords.
“Instead of relying on just a password, consider enabling Twitter’s Login Verification that requires you to enter a code that is sent to your mobile phone. This adds an extra layer of security,” the company said.

Nokia in talks with Indian telcos to start 5G network trials in the country

Nokia in talks with Indian telcos to start 5G network trials in the country

Image: Reuters
Nokia Networks is in talks with Indian telecom operators to start trials of next generation 5G networks even as the country is yet to see full-scale roll out of 4G technology based mobile voice and data services. The Finnish telecom equipment maker is already testing the fifth-generation networks with global telecom giants like US-based Verizon, Korean SK Telecom and Japan’s NTT Docomo.
The 5G technology will guarantee delivery of 100 megabit per second speed at homes and will be capable of handling 1000 times more data traffic when it will be commercialised by 2020, Nokia Networks’ head of mobile broadband Milivoj Vela said on the sidelines of an event today. In India, Nokia Networks is part of Telecommunications Standards Development Society which is working on 5G, and is in discussion with telecom operators to start 5G trials.
However, Indian telcos are still investing in 4G technology to roll out the fourth generation networks and large parts of the country are yet to be covered under the high-speed data and voice services. Talking about 5G networks, Vela said that 5G will focus on data services while voice calls will be facilitated through 4G technology.
“It will be used for purposes beyond voice and data communications carried by people today. It will has less than 1 millisecond latency that will be used by machines for quick action like for to stop in case it identifies any obstacle, surgery from remote location etc. Discussion about spectrum (at global level) in which 5G will operate will finish by 2019. Commercial 5G deployment will start in 2020. Then you will see 100 Mbps guaranteed speed everywhere,” Vela said.
He said that 5G will operate in spectrum band above 6000 MHz and the technology will be launched in phases. “One cell (mobile antenna) in 5G will be able to handle 1000 times more data traffic in 2020 compared to data traffic in 2010. We have already achieved 1 million devices connected to single cell site and 30 Gbps speed on 73 GHz band in lab,” Vela said.
At present spectrum band between 700 MHz and 2.6 GHz are available for mobile services in India. Wi-fi services are generally used between 2.4 GHz to 5.9 GHz. “Already 4G is taking voice calling to high definition voice calls and voice call cannot be better than this. 5G will about high quality data experience. It will enhance telepresence (web conferencing) to a level where one will not feel the difference if a person is in room or on telepresence,” Vela said.
